Beef Chili Recipe
My chili recipe is a bowl of comfort and it's one of my favorite one dish meals. Everyone prizes their own for different reasons and America has chili cook-offs nationwide all year round.
Chili is a complete meal that's packed with protein, fiber and lip smacking deliciousness which makes it ideal for Iftar.
I like my chili mild and a little saucy. Chili is commonly served with cornbread or crusty bread but I like mine with a few tortilla chips on the side. It's stays in the fridge for up to 3 days and freezes well.
Beef Chili Recipe
1 Hour 15 Minutes
1 large onion, finely chopped
5 garlic cloves, finely chopped
1 carrot, finely chopped
1 celery stalk, peeled and finely chopped
1 kg/2lbs ground beef
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1/2 teaspoon salt or to taste
1 teaspoon black pepper or to taste
2 teaspoons cumin powder
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon smoked paprika
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 cans tomato sauce
1 can crushed tomatoes
1 can kidney beans or more if you like (drained)
In a large pot, heat oil and sauté onions and garlic for 5 minutes.
Add carrots and celery and sauté for another 5 minutes.
Add ground beef and fry on high heat for 10 minutes.
Add tomato paste, salt, black pepper, cumin powder, chili powder, paprika powder and brown sugar and continue frying for 5 minutes.
Add tomato sauce and crushed tomatoes and cook on low heat, covered for 40 minutes.
Add kidney beans and cook for 10 minutes on low heat.
Tips and Bits
You can make this with ground lamb or chicken if you prefer.
If you prefer thicker chili, you can cook longer on high heat to thicken.
Chili can be topped with sour cream or shredded cheese.
Outside of the US, chili is called Chili Con Carne.
Outside of the US, chili powder is ground, spicy chilies. In the US, chili powder is a mix of spices and mild chilies which is specifically used to make this dish.
