Dried Apricot Dessert Recipe

Apricot dessert, made with small dried apricots, is a popular Hyderabadi dessert and one of my favorites.

It’s easy to make this jam-like dessert and it freezes well. I’ve had so many variations of this dessert.

Some people purée the stewed apricots, some layer the custard on top of the stewed apricots and some serve the apricots with a dollop of vanilla ice cream.

I like my recipe the best but feel free to tweak it to your own taste. There is a bit of planning involved, in that you have to soak the dried apricots overnight. It's an easy, delicious dessert and a real crowd pleaser!

SERVES

TOTAL TIME

1 Hour

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 kg/2 pounds small, dried apricots

  • 1 cup sugar or to taste (I like it sweet)

  • 1 green cardamom (optional)

  • 1 lemon, juiced

  • Custard or heavy cream to serve

METHOD

  1. Wash dried apricots and soak overnight in a bowl filled with water just enough to cover the apricots.

  2. The next day, squeeze the seeds out of the soft, swelled apricots and set aside.

  3. Put the seedless apricots in a large pot with the water that the apricots soaked in overnight.

  4. Cook on medium heat, stirring occasionally for 30 minutes, until apricots start breaking down and turning brown.

  5. Add sugar and cardamom (optional) and cook for another 30 minutes until mixture is an auburn color and thinner than jam.

  6. Add lemon juice and mix.

  7. Serve cold or room temperature.

Tips and Bits

Wash the seeds and crack open with a mallet, taking out the kernel inside. Garnish apricot dessert with the kernels or use chopped almonds like I did.

I let this cool and freeze portions in freezer bags.

Keep on the thinner side as it will become thicker as it cools.
