Fried Fish with Thai Chili Sauce Recipe

I have always loved deep fried food and battered, fried fish is one of my all-time favorites. One of the best things about living in London was the fish and chips from the local “chippy". 😋

Even though I drool just thinking about hot, crispy fish sprinkled with lots of salt and even more malt vinegar, this fried fish recipe with a Thai twist is equally droolworthy! I use a store bought tempura mix for the batter which makes this dish super quick and easy. The wow factor is all in the tangy, spicy, garlicky sauce that will blow your socks off!

The next time you are in the mood for something super spicy, try this dish and let me know how you like it!

TOTAL TIME

30 Minutes

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 box tempura mix, mix according to instructions on box

  • 1kg/2lbs fish fillets cut into large pieces

  • 1 lime, juiced

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic paste

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • Oil for deep frying

For the Sauce

  • 6 cloves garlic, finely chopped

  • 2 Thai red chilies, finely chopped

  • 1 stalk lemongrass, finely chopped (only the white, soft part)

  • 2 tablespoons fish sauce or to taste

  • 2 limes, juiced

  • 1 teaspoon sugar

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt or to taste

  • 2 lime leaves, roughly torn (optional)

METHOD

  1. In a large bowl, mix fish, lime juice, garlic paste and salt and set aside.

  2. In a medium bowl, mix garlic, chilies, lemongrass, fish sauce, lime juice, sugar, salt, and lime leaves (optional) and set aside.

  3. In a frypan, heat oil. Dip the fish into the tempura batter, generously coating both sides and carefully put in the hot oil.

  4. Fry a few pieces of fish at a time, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 4-5 minutes, then very carefully turn over and fry for another 4-5 minutes until golden brown.

  5. Drain on paper towels and serve with the Thai chili sauce.

Tips and Bits

Be very careful when chopping chilies. Do not touch face or eyes until washing hands well.

Be very careful when you are deep frying. Try to use a burner in the back turning the handle away from you.
